It was snowy days and cancelled classes... all week long!
By week's end, the phone was ringing and email was flying to set up playdates for the "kids". Bria had 3 this weekend (Fri - Sun) and another a week from Saturday. CJ got to attend two of them thus far and loved it!
Hey count me in! I don't know who needed it more, my 4 yr old or ME! haha
You can only be couped up with the kids for so long... work doesn't count 'cause well, it's work! Plus, I don't get to chit chat at the office.
I definitely enjoy the one-on-one playdates where us moms chat for two hours or so while the kids play.
The playdates that are within walking distance are particularly convenient since you don't have to plan as carefully.. or at least that's the hope. Everybody needs one or two neighbors with whom you can squeeze in a spontaneous playdate! ...In a pinch, like on a snowy day! Unfortunately, two families on our block that we did regular, spontaneous playdates with are moving soon. :-( I'm really bummed.
So I find myself scouting our neighborhood for families with kids the same age as mine to potentially "backfill" the "playdate-neighbors" we are about to lose. Is that anal? or is it good networking? Am I the only one who worries about this sort of thing?
I think families that share the same values and parenting philosophies as me and whose children get along well with my children are priceless!! Not only do we become good friends but these playdates make for good childhood memories...
OK, I won't get too mushy or "Normal Rockwell" on ya. But it's hard nowadays. You can't easily tell your kids to "go out and play" like our moms did. And not every neighborhood lends itself to playing kickball in the streets. "Playdates" are a new addition to our culture and we want it to be a good addition. Right?
So, we moms get on the phone and whip out our calendars and pencil each other in. And scout the neighborhood and preschool classes and ballet or soccer for new friends with whom we can set up a playdate. For the kids of course! ;-)
